Kyrgyzstan is one of the last places on earth where horses remain a primary mode of transport through the mountains. More than 90% of the country is mountainous — and the most spectacular landscapes are only accessible on horseback or on foot. The culture is deeply nomadic: families have been moving between summer and winter pastures for over a thousand years, and the traditions of horsemanship, yurt-making and mountain life remain very much alive.
When you ride with Yrys, you are not following a tourist itinerary. You are riding trails that shepherds have used for generations, crossing passes at 3,400 metres, sleeping in yurts with nomadic families, and waking up to a silence that simply does not exist at home. Kyrgyzstan is raw, real, and unlike anywhere else — and that is exactly why people come back.
Son-Kul Lake (3,016m) is the second largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and one of the most iconic destinations in Central Asia. Surrounded by vast alpine pastures called jailoos, it is home to dozens of nomadic families every summer who come with their livestock, their horses and their yurts. There are no paved roads reaching the heart of the lake — the only real way to arrive is on horseback, via the mountain passes that the shepherds have always used.
The most popular route departs from Kyzart village and crosses either the Tuz-Ashuu Pass (3,400m) or the Ozbek Pass (3,300m), depending on the tour. Both offer breathtaking panoramic views before descending into the lake basin. The ride takes 3 to 5 hours depending on your pace — and arriving at the lake on horseback, after a day in the mountains, is one of those moments that stays with you.

"We did a 3-day horse trek with Yrys and it was honestly one of the highlights of our trip to Kyrgyzstan. If you want a guide who speaks good English, has an amazing personality, takes you away from the crowds, and actually lets you ride the horses (including galloping!), choose Yrys. Yrys took us completely different ways where we barely saw anyone else. We even rode through an amazing canyon that wasn't even a trail. Truly such a special experience."
"Highlight of our trip! I cannot express how much fun it was to gallop on a horse through the Kyrgyzstani mountains. Our guide spoke excellent English and was very personable. I was a beginner with limited horse riding experience and he did a great job making me feel comfortable. The food was great, the yurt accommodations were great and the views were unforgettable. I would also like to express my thanks to our guide's wife — she was extremely hospitable and made the experience even better."
"Best experience I have ever had. Yrys is a great man and very experienced rider. Definitely will come back."
"It was one of my best vacations, an adventure of a lifetime. Kyrgyzstan is a country I will definitely visit again. Irys, a young, wonderful guide, and his wonderful family welcomed me and treated me like I was part of their family. He showed me Kyrgyzstan from a more hidden, non-touristy perspective. He showed me its true life, customs, rituals, and hospitality. The food his wife and mother cooked was delicious. I definitely have to go back there."
Assolutamente consigliato!"

Moderate. You will be on horseback 3 to 5 hours per day on mountain terrain. No fitness training is required, but good general health is recommended. The horses do the hard work — your main job is to stay in the saddle and enjoy the scenery.
No electricity or Wi-Fi in the mountain yurts — bring a power bank to charge devices. This is part of the experience. The guesthouse in Kyzart has basic charging facilities if you arrive the night before.
Pack light — your bag is carried by a packhorse. Essentials: warm fleece, waterproof jacket, comfortable riding trousers (not shorts), sturdy closed shoes, sun protection, a small daypack and a power bank. Helmets and sleeping bags are provided.
Children above 10 and adults of all ages are welcome. Yrys adapts the pace to the group. Elderly guests in good health have completed the tours without difficulty. If in doubt, contact us and we will advise honestly.
We strongly recommend travel insurance covering adventure activities (horseback riding). Medical facilities are limited in the mountains. A good policy gives you peace of mind for the entire trip.
Yes, if availability permits. Contact Yrys directly by WhatsApp — he will confirm within a few hours. In peak season (July–August) it is better to book at least 1–2 weeks in advance to secure your dates.
Tell Yrys where you want to go, how long you have, and how many people are joining. He'll build a tour that fits you perfectly. You can also ask about currently booked tours to join a group and reduce the cost.
